A State Supreme Court officer accidentally shot himself in the hand Wednesday afternoon after taking his gun out in a Manhattan courtroom.
The officer was checking his gun at 111 Centre Street when the bullet discharged, grazing the palm of his hand. He was taken to a hospital, treated and released.
“He’s lucky,” said Dennis Quirk, president of the New York State Court Officers Association. “It’s an unfortunate situation. We’re thankful it’s just a superficial wound.”
The incident will trigger an investigation by the court system’s Inspector General and the NYPD.
“That’s ridiculous!” a fellow court officer said. “He’s not even supposed to have it out.”
