The first coyote sighting ever reported in Nassau, Long Island has prompted officials on Tuesday to warn residents about the developing canine intrusion.

The Nassau County SPCA sent out a list of safety tips after the first confirmed sighting took place in the village of Roslyn.

“There is no need for alarm or panic, but to minimize conflicts, it is important that people do their part to maintain the natural fear that coyotes have of humans,” read a statement from the SPCA.

One of the suggestions from the organization was to “make loud noises, wave your arms, throw sticks and stones” if a coyote approaches.

“Do not run away, running away after seeing a coyote is behaving like prey,” authorities said.

Some locals on Facebook said the coyote was a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

“Leave him be please, we need them to keep the rodent population down,” John Baricevich from nearby Sea Cliff wrote.

“Just use common sense. I had a pair of foxes in my back yard. Never knew they were there until I put a camera up.”

Residents were told to call 911 if they spotted a coyote.
