Former NYPD Officer Peter Liang’s new lawyer says the fact that his client’s CPR instructor has been stripped of her gun and badge over allegations of improper training is good news as the ex-cop appeals his manslaughter conviction.
“The one thing we’ve now learned for certain is that [the officers] were not carefully trained,” defense attorney Paul Shechtman told The Post.
Prosecutors in the cop’s trial accused Liang of not aiding Akai Gurley, whom he accidentally shot in 2014 inside a Brooklyn housing-project stairwell, even though Liang knew CPR.
During the trial, Liang, his former partner, Shaun Landau, and another officer from their graduating academy class testified that they were “fed” answers to the CPR portion of the exam and never practiced on a mannequin.
Liang was convicted of manslaughter for Gurley’s death.
His CPR instructor, Officer Melissa Brown, has been placed on modified assignment and may face disciplinary action.
