Gov. Cuomo is being accused of kicking elderly New Yorkers to the curb.
His new budget shifts $17 million in funds from senior-citizen day-care centers to child-care services, claims a Bronx lawmaker.
State Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr., the ranking Democrat on the Committee on Aging, said Cuomo’s spending plan eliminates so-called Title XX funding to 65 city senior day-care centers.
“The loss of these funds would lead to the closure of 65 facilities which currently help 6,000 vulnerable senior citizens who rely on them to receive essential nutrition, socialization and health promotion activities,” Diaz said in a letter to the governor.
“Why is the governor taking away $17 million from senior citizens?” Diaz said. “Don’t use senior citizens as a pawn. Don’t scare senior citizens.”
Cuomo’s executive spending bill says Title XX money must be spent on child care, victims of domestic abuse or adult protective services — not senior day care.
Diaz said the senior centers have received discretionary Title XX funds for decades.
Cuomo budget spokesman Morris Peters said: “This proposal enables the State to maintain the current level of child care subsidies. In all, the Budget is a $400 million positive impact for New York City.”
