A liberal Brooklyn lawmaker said Tuesday he’s considering bucking incumbent Andrew Cuomo and endorsing rival Zephyr Teachout in the Democratic primary for governor.
City Councilman Jumaane WilliamsChad Rachman“My options are open in the Democratic primary for governor,” said City Councilman Jumaane Williams, a day after meeting with Teachout.
Williams is a founding member of the progressive caucus and a member of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus.
“I liked everything Teachout had to say. I was very excited with what I heard,” Williams said.
Williams said Teachout was knowledgeable about the issues of affordable housing, education and gun violence.
“I don’t believe I’ve heard enough about the proposed solutions of these issues over the past four years,” the councilman said.
But Cuomo has dramatically expanded state funding for pre-k, championed a law to protect and expand charter schools, and approved stricter gun control measures.
Williams, citing a court ruling, claims the state still under-funds city public schools and said Cuomo’s tougher weapons law does little to address gun violence in the city.
