It took four years, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo finally got around Friday to appointing a commissioner to run the Department of Motor Vehicles — and he’s on record as opposing the governor’s plan to offer driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

The governor’s pick, Buffalo Comptroller Mark Schroeder, previously served as a state assemblyman and in 2007 joined a campaign against then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan that would give undocumented residents the right to apply for licenses.

“I think it’s misguided,” Schroeder told the Buffalo News at the time.

Schroeder on Saturday changed his tune, saying he would back a new policy — should it be approved by Cuomo and the Legislature — that provides driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

“My job is to implement the law,” Schroeder said.
