Gov. Cuomo threw a brushback pitch at Mayor de Blasio on Tuesday, saying it’s “way premature” to discuss whether he’ll endorse Hizzoner for re-election in 2017.
Speaking outside Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., where he attended Game 1 of the World Series, Cuomo fielded a few questions — mostly about the Mets.
But he also was asked if he’s decided whether to back de Blasio in two years. “No. It’s way premature for that. We have a lot of time before that decision’s ripe,” Cuomo responded.
The governor and mayor have a tense relationship, with de Blasio accusing Cuomo publicly of undermining him in Albany.
The mayor is already gearing up for 2017 by scheduling a campaign event Thursday to try to lock in supporters. The early campaign kickoff will take place at the Sheraton Times Square about two years before the mayoral race.
A “save-the-date” invite said the maximum allowable contribution is $4,950 under the city’s campaign-finance rules.
“It’s unheard of to do it so early,” said one source who received an invite. “It shows he’s trying to head off the competition.”
A Quinnipiac University poll in August found 47 percent of voters didn’t think de Blasio deserved a second term, while 41 percent did.
The de Blasio campaign declined comment.
