Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday ordered the New York State Education Department and police to investigate claims that a group of pre-teen black girls suspected of carrying drugs was subjected to strip searches at their Binghamton middle school.
“The allegations that 12-year-old girls were strip searched for drugs after being perceived as ‘hyper and giddy’ at a Binghamton middle school are deeply disturbing and raise serious concerns of racial and gender bias,” Cuomo said in launching the inquiry.
After seeming unusually upbeat during their lunch hour, the four girls were ushered into the nurse’s office at East Middle School on Jan. 15 and ordered to strip down by the nurse and assistant principal, a community group alleged at a recent school board meeting.
Three of the four girls complied, while the fourth was suspended when she refused, according to the claim by Progressive Leaders of Tomorrow, which the school district has denied.
“Asking a child to remove her clothing … is shaming, humiliating, traumatic sexual harassment,” Cuomo said Wednesday. “In New York, we have zero tolerance for discrimination or harassment of any kind, especially in our schools, and we stand with those who are calling for clarity on this troubling incident.”
