ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is putting the seemingly endless and costly renovation of New York’s historic Capitol on a fast track designed to save $2.3 million and complete some aspects two years early.

The 14-year project to restore the seat of state government and major Albany tourist attraction was scheduled to be done in 2014 at a cost of nearly $48 million.

In the midst of the state fiscal crisis, Cuomo ordered a review of the project beginning in January.

The work will include restoring skylights to how they appeared in the 1880s. The restoration also includes replacing a 120-year-old section of roof. The new roof is expected to last 100 years.

The changes should result in more hiring, with workers doing more projects at the same time.
