Gov. Cuomo’s budget office has restored $50,000 that was cut from a $200,000 allocation in the state budget for the Special Olympics, officials said Tuesday.
The governor’s budget has allocated $1 million for the games each year and the state Legislature had since 2017 added $200,000 for Unified Sports, a program combining high-school athletes with disabled students.
But this year, $50,000 was trimmed, bringing the legislative total to $150,000 before it was restored.
“The same scenario just played out on the federal level and the president put the money back in,” said Assemblyman Kieran Lalor (R-Dutchess).
“It’s offensive, bad politics and terrible policy,” added Lalor, whose district will host the 2019 Special Olympics New York Summer Games.
