Cynthia Nixon played coy Thursday on whether she would mount a campaign for governor on the Working Families Party ballot line if she loses the Democratic Party primary to heavily favored two-term incumbent Andrew Cuomo.
“I’m not prepared to say,” Nixon told NYS Public Radio.
If Nixon loses the Democratic primary in September and keeps running on another line for the general election in November, she could siphon votes from Cuomo and improve the long odds of a Republican winning.
In other words, she could play the spoiler.
It’s a hypothetical scenario for now.
Cuomo is feverishly working to secure the WFP line, as he did in 2014 and 2010.
While there’s angst with Cuomo among some leftie activists in the WFP, Cuomo has the backing of the influential labor union wing of the party.
In another development, Nixon said she’d meet with City Councilman Jumaane Williams, who is running against Kathy Hochul, Cuomo’s running-mate.
