New York City prosecutors want one trial for a mother and grandmother charged in the death of a 4-year-old found beaten, drugged and starved.

Carlotta Brett-Pierce has pleaded not guilty to murder. Her mother, Loretta Brett has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

Marchella Brett-Pierce died Sept. 2. Prosecutors say the little girl had severe medical problems and had been tied to her bed.

The family was under the supervision of the city’s child welfare agency at the time. The caseworker and supervisor on the case have been charged with criminally negligent homicide. They pleaded not guilty.

Brett’s lawyer opposes joining the cases. Brooklyn state Supreme Court Justice Patricia DiMango said she’d issue a ruling in May.
