A Bronx dad once featured in the New York Times for devoting himself to his special-needs son’s care was accused of stabbing the boy repeatedly with a screwdriver during a standoff in which he also held a teenage girl hostage, police said Wednesday.

Tyree Scott, 30, was arrested after allegedly attacking 6-year-old Zahir around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday inside their apartment at 944 Rogers Place in Longwood, cops said.

A 2019 Times story about the father and son said the boy had hypotonia (a condition that causes muscles to deteriorate) and said he is unable to sit up on his own.

The article described how Scott, who had an absent dad and whose mom died when he was two, landing him in foster care, had cared for his son full-time since the child was about a year old.

“That is the heart of the story to young fathers: Just be there for your kids,” Scott said in the article.

On Tuesday, police were called to Scott’s address for a report of a man holding his son and a 16-year-old girl against their will.

Scott allegedly met the teen on social media and she went to his apartment on Monday evening to smoke pot, according to cops.

At some point, Scott allegedly became angry and punched the girl in the face, taking her phone and refusing to let her leave, police said.

Scott gave the teen her phone back on Tuesday morning and told her to call 911 because he wanted to see “police officers and the news media in front of his home,” police sources said.

When officers arrived, cops said Scott refused to open the door — but they were able to get in anyway.

That’s when Scott allegedly stabbed his son multiple times, according to police sources.

The boy was taken to Harlem Hospital and had to have surgery, the sources said. He was in critical but stable condition on Wednesday evening.

Scott was arrested on the scene and taken to Lincoln Hospital for a psychological evaluation, cops said. He was in custody Wednesday on charges of attempted murder in the second degree, assault, assault in the second degree and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

Scott has three prior arrests that are unsealed, including choking a girlfriend in 2015, assault the same year and criminal possession of a weapon in 2014, the sources said. The outcome of the cases was unclear.

The January 2019 Times Neediest Cases Fund story — titled “His 4-Year-Old Can’t Sit Up. So a Father Devotes Himself to Care” — painted Scott as a doting dad.

In addition to requiring a wheelchair, little Zahir also has epilepsy, difficulty swallowing and problems with his intestines, the story said.

Scott said he was forced to quit a job working nights for Macy’s on 34th Street because of the demands of his son’s care.

The father and son became homeless soon after and stayed at shelters in the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens, according to the paper.

The article detailed how Scott was starting to turn his life around, becoming a licensed security guard in the hopes of getting a new job and finding an apartment in the Bronx.

“Don’t give up. It’s not going to be hard forever if you stay focused,” he was quoted as saying.
