“A guys’ day” turned tragic for an upstate family boating on Oneida Lake near Syracuse when the pilot, distracted by fireworks, hit a buoy, killing himself, his father and his brother.

Carolyn Aceto said her husband, Anthony, and her three stepsons, one of whom survived, knew the lake “like the back of their hand” but turned to look at Thursday night’s festivities.

Anthony Aceto, 66, and his sons Stephen, 41, of Tampa, Fla., and Timothy, 33, died. Anthony Aceto Jr., 39, broke a shoulder bone.

They had been celebrating Stephen’s upcoming engagement.
