Former Mayor David Dinkins is planning his own fabulous funeral.
Dinkins, 89, New York City’s first black mayor, shared plans for his own memorial service while speaking at Sunday’s memorial service for former Queens Borough President Helen Marshall.
It will have a New Orleans flair as well as Big Apple and military pomp.
“I’m hoping to get Wynton Marsalis,” Dinkins said, hinting that the trumpeter might play “When the Saints Go Marching In” or “New York, New York.” Former Marine Dinkins is also requesting a Marine Color Guard, the playing of the “Marines’ Hymn,” and the NYPD Pipes & Drums Band.
James Forbes, senior minister emeritus of Riverside Church, will officiate, Hizzoner said.
