Even as a kid, the mayor was a fan of the underdog.
Mayor de Blasio raved on Thursday about the old “Underdog” TV series — a cartoon about a mild-mannered dog named Shoeshine Boy who turns into a superhero whenever villains appear.

It’s not clear how the series — which ran from 1964-67 and was in syndication until 1973 — came up in their conversation.
The bizarre banter between the two powerful elected officials wasn’t enough to grab the attention of one woman who was engrossed in The Post’s Page Six inches from Hizzoner.
The straphanger didn’t glance up at the mayor — even when he and Schumer started speaking with Boston accents, again for reasons unknown.
“Wicked fahhh,” de Blasio said.
“Green Monstahhhh,” Schumer responded — referring to the enormous left-field wall at Fenway Park.
The roughly 15-minute ride was part of a nationwide program intended to prod Congress to renew — and ideally increase — federal transportation funding ahead of a May 31 deadline.
