The special election to replace Letitia James as the city’s public advocate will be held Tuesday, Feb. 26, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Saturday.

More than 20 candidates—including former Democratic City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, council members Jumaane Williams (D-Brooklyn) and Eric Ulrich (R-Queens) and Reform Party leader John Tabacco — are reportedly in the running as James moves up to become the state attorney general.

Now the pols have just eight weeks to jockey for position and grab the attention of voters, who typically turn out in dismally low numbers for special elections.

The public advocate job carries little power, but commands a major megaphone—and is seen as a stepping stone to higher office, having vaulted both James and de Blasio to loftier perches.
