Mayor Bill de Blasio called on the city’s Board of Elections on Monday to open 100 early polling sites across the five boroughs in time for November’s election.
In January, the state legislature passed election reforms that allow voters to cast ballots up to nine days before Election Day.
The beleaguered BOE– which oversaw a chaotic election last fall where voters waited up to two hours because of broken machines– turned down $20 million in city funding in 2016, in part because the offer came with conditions.
De Blasio urged the board to accept $75 million he’s offering this time — before it’s too late to set up the early voting sites.
“People want to vote. They need to vote. Let’s make sure the Board of Elections isn’t the only thing standing in their way,” the mayor said at a Harlem rally to pressure the BOE to act.
A spokeswoman for the BOE declined comment.
