Mayor de Blasio on Sunday defended the lack of resolution of the probe by the US Department of Justice into the 2014 police-chokehold death of Eric Garner on Staten Island.

Asked about criticism of the case on the second anniversary of Garner’s fatal confrontation with cops, Hizzoner insisted that no one in government was dragging their feet.

“Everything is being done meticulously because we want to make sure that what happens is fair to everyone involved. These are tragedies,” he told 1010 WINS radio Sunday morning.

During a speech at the First Baptist Central Church on Staten Island later, the mayor struck a more hopeful tone amid a spate of global violence.

“We could say it’s a horrible time, it’s a dangerous time, it’s a violent time . . . In fact, slowly but surely and very imperfectly, humans beings are making some bigger progress,” he said.

Public Advocate Letitia James, speaking after the mayor, addressed the “aching injustice” of Garner’s death, which she said has “only been made worse by the indecision of the Justice Department. ”
