Jersey Shore beaches may be reopening for Memorial Day weekend, but that will not be the case in New York City as Mayor Bill de Blasio suggested Friday that Big Apple shorelines won’t be opening anytime soon.
“On the beaches we’re just not ready,” de Blasio said during his daily coronavirus press briefing, explaining, “It’s painful because we’d all love to be able to go to the beach with the hot weather, but it’s not safe yet.”
Hizzoner said the city has made “great overall progress” in its fight against the coronavirus, but “not enough progress to meet our goals” or the state criteria that need to be met in order for the five boroughs to start a phased reopening.
When it comes to the reopening of the city’s beaches like Brooklyn’s Coney Island Beach, Rockaway Beach in Queens and Orchard Beach in The Bronx, “We’re going to look at it constantly,” de Blasio said.
“The day may come, but we’re not there yet,” said the mayor.

Asked about New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s decision to reopen the state’s beaches in time for Memorial Day, de Blasio said the state is “very different” and noted that New York City has been the “epicenter” of the world for the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I think the world of Phil Murphy. He’s an extraordinary leader and he has a very different state,” de Blasio said, as he added, “our people don’t get around by car … The vast majority of people in New Jersey travel by car, that’s not true in New York.”
“People going to the beaches [in New York City] means getting on buses and subways,” the mayor said.
On a beach like Coney Island, “you can’t spread people out” because “they get jam-packed,” de Blasio said.
De Blasio also announced that there will be enhanced patrols on beaches to make sure people do not swim amid the prolonged closures.
“New York City is New York City and we’re going to be slow and cautious and careful to get this right,” he said.
Meanwhile, de Blasio said the NYPD will be limiting entry into certain city parks this weekend for social distancing purposes as the mercury is expected to move into the 80s today and the 70s over the weekend.
Access will be limited at the Sheep Meadow in Central Park, at Piers 45 and 46 in Manhattan’s Hudson River Park and at Domino Park in Brooklyn.
