A dead baby was found dumped in the bathroom of a Financial District eatery Monday morning, with cops now scrambling to solve the grisly mystery, law enforcement sources said.

The body of the child — whose gender and age were not immediately known — was discovered just before 10 a.m. inside the restroom at Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine on Fulton Street near Gold Street downtown, cops and sources said.

Police responded to a 911 call and found the baby unconscious and unresponsive, authorities said.

The infant was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS workers, cops said.

“It’s horrific — it’s a baby,” a neighborhood mom told The Post. “I’m assuming it’s someone who had no other option. They’re probably desperate.

“This kind of stuff usually points to a systemic problem,” she said. “Why would a mother of a young infant feel so desperate to do that? Why would she feel she has no other option than to do that?

“That’s horrible. I can’t believe that happened.”

Nito Ali, a worker at a nearby deli, said he gave NYPD detectives surveillance video from his shop.

“They asked for camera video for this store area … to see who just comes in there and who’s not, like, the person who dropped the baby or something,” Ali said. “I really don’t know.

“It’s crazy, man. It happens from God.”

A woman identifying herself as assistant manager at Sophie’s said cops allowed the restaurant to remain open.

“Right now we don’t have any information,” she said. “They’re doing the investigation. We don’t know anything.”

The circumstances of the baby’s death are under investigation, and it was not immediately known whether criminality is suspected.

No arrests have been made.
