Debt collectors here will have to provide documentary proof that the people they’re pursuing owe the money they’re demanding, under new consumer-protection rules announced yesterday.

“Collectors are increasingly pursuing debt that New Yorkers don’t owe. Let’s say one name on their list is Michael Bloomberg,” the mayor said.

“They quickly find people with that name all across the tri-state area [and] are tempted to call each one, fishing for the Bloomberg they’re after.”
