Voter anger in the suburbs knocked three-term Westchester County executive Andrew Spano out of office and left Nassau County chief Tom Suozzi hanging by a thread.
Both were considered stars in the Democratic Party and shoo-ins for re-election.
Republican Rob Astorino surprisingly trounced Spano by 16 points in a rematch. Spano had defeated him by an identical margin four years ago.
Suozzi led Republican rival Edward Mangano by a mere 237 votes before a recount of 200,000 votes and a tally of 7,000 absentee ballots.
