Red-faced Democrats on Thursday said they’d given $8,900 in contributions from disgraced ex-Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to a domestic-abuse charity.
“New York has led the nation in the fight for women’s rights. That’s why — when we learned of the disturbing allegations against Eric Schneiderman — we donated these contributions to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence,” said state Geoff Berman, executive director of the state Democratic Committee.
But the Working Families Party – which got $24,500 from Schneiderman – was caught flat-footed when The Post asked what it planned to do with the tainted money.
“It’s before I was in charge, so I need to research it,” said WFP state director Bill Lipton, who helped found the left-leaning political party.
After giving the issue more thought, Lipton Thursday night said he has a worthy use for the tainted Schneiderman donations.
“We’re going to use every cent in support of great women candidates. The best way to change the system is to put progressive women in power,” Lipton said.
The campaign of Cynthia Nixon, the WFP-endorsed candidate for governor, declined comment on what should be done with the left-leaning party’s Schneiderman donations.
Schneiderman abruptly resigned Monday following published claims that he assaulted three girlfriends and a women who spurned his advances.
The National Organization for Women and the state Senate Republican Women’s Caucus have demanded that Schneiderman donate the $8.5 million in his political war chest to help victims of domestic violence.
