East Village City Council candidate Ronnie Cho claimed on the eve of Tuesday’s primary vote to have won the endorsement of Yankees great Derek Jeter — but the claim turned out to be a big error.
Hours after Cho released an e-mail in which Jeter showered him with praise — and his campaign characterized it as an “endorsement” — the pol’s team sent out a follow-up statement admitting it wasn’t true.
“There was a communications mix-up and a draft release was sent out prematurely,” the statement said. “Ronnie appreciates Derek Jeter’s kind words of support.”
The walk-back of the Jeter-endorsement claim came only after the ex-Bomber’s charity, the Turn 2 Foundation, publicly denied he had waded into local politics.
In the original statement, Cho’s campaign quoted Jeter as saying “he’s making a real difference.”
“It’s important for our youth to have role models who encourage them to make positive impacts on their communities,” Jeter wrote in an initial e-mail sent by the Cho campaign. “Ronnie has dedicated himself to exactly that.”
