RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — A detective investigating the hate crime stabbing of an Ecuadorean immigrant says a Long Island teenager admitted in a five-page confession that he inflicted the fatal blow.

Detective John McLeer testified Monday at the trial of Jeffrey Conroy.

Conroy has pleaded not guilty to murder and manslaughter as a hate crime in the November 2008 stabbing of Marcelo Lucero.

McLeer said Conroy gave the statement voluntarily after being read his rights.

Prosecutors say the killing culminated a campaign of violence inflicted by a group of Long Island teens against Hispanics. Four of the teens have already pleaded guilty to hate-crime related charges. Two others are awaiting trial.
