Prominent Detroit synagogue leader Samantha Woll was found stabbed to death outside her home Saturday morning — and the public is urged to avoid speculating about the circumstances of her death until more details are known.
The “politically connected” synagogue president, 40, was found outside her home in the city’s Lafayette Park neighborhood, east of downtown, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Police said the motive for the killing is not yet known. The Michigan chapter of the Anti-Defamation League asked the public to “refrain from speculation” until more information is available.
“We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the death of Samantha Woll, a beloved and respected leader in the Detroit Jewish Community,” the organization said in a statement.
“As we mourn her tragic passing, we urge the community to refrain from speculation and allow law enforcement to gather facts.”
Detroit police responded to a 911 call of an unresponsive person around 6:30 a.m. and found a body outside a home on Joliet Place, according to multiple published reports.

Woll’s body was discovered along with a “trail of blood” that led from the suspected crime scene to Woll’s home, the outlet reported.
Police believe the crime took place inside her home, according to CNN.

The killing comes as tensions remain high amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas as well as a recent rise in anti-Semitic attacks.
The number of antisemitic posts online increased by 1,200% since Hamas began its terror attack in Israel.
At least 157,000 posts between October 7 to October 10 have called for violence against Israel, Zionists and Jews, according to a survey obtained by the Jerusalem Post.
Woll led the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue and previously worked for Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin and on the re-election campaign of Attorney General Dana Nessel, both Democrats, the Free Press reported.
A motive for the killing is not yet known, the police department said. The Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue wrote that it was “shocked and saddened” to learn of Woll’s “unexpected” death on its Facebook Saturday afternoon.
She had led the synagogue since 2022 and was involved in other local Jewish organizations.
“This is a terrible tragedy. Sam had so many gifts still to contribute to the world. May her memory be a blessing,” wrote Mitchel Blum-Alexander, one of many who commented on the Facebook post.\

White said Saturday night that his department “has been leveraging every law enforcement and community resource it has to help further the investigation.”
“Understandably, this crime leaves many unanswered questions. This matter is under investigation, and I am asking that everyone remain patient while investigators carefully examine every aspect of the available evidence,” he said in a statement. “It is important that no conclusions be drawn until all of the available facts are reviewed.”
An update on the investigation will be announced tomorrow, White said.
