Thousands of mourners gathered to remember slain NYPD cop Brian Moore Monday night during a vigil at Plainedge High School on Long Island.
“He was a great friend. He always had a smile on his face,” said detective Mike Cerullo, who is working on the case.
“I helped pull him out of the car. It was devastating seeing a guy I went to high school with looking like that.”
Moore, who was shot in the face Saturday, died at Jamaica Hospital when he was taken off life support following brain surgery.
At the memorial, Detective Jason Caputo drove a 1989 Chevrolet caprice police car to the memorial, an exact replica of the car fellow Plainedge album and NYPD cop Eddie Byrne was killed in.
“Eddie was assassinated in uniform. Brian was in plain clothes,” Caputo said about the two slain cops.
“Every day you go to work you don’t know if it’s going to be your last.”
Pictures were on display that showed Moore as a child. His high school yearbook said he was wore a Number 1 jersey for the basketball team.
“That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” his quote from senior year read.
A heartbreaking note from Moore’s parents appeared on the back of the yearbook:
“Dear Brian, We’re so proud of you. We wish you both personally and professionally a bright, rewarding future. Congratulations on your many accomplishments, and remember to always keep that special sense of humor. All our love, Mom, Dad & Christine.”
