A bone-marrow drive for an 11-year-old “Lion King” star with leukemia was one of the hottest matinees on Broadway yesterday, with 385 people registering as donors.
Shannon Tavarez played the role of Young Nala the lion cub for seven months before she was diagnosed with leukemia in April.
Her best shot at recovering and returning to the theater is a marrow transplant, which requires a genetic match. The drive was held at St. Malachy’s Roman Catholic Church in the Theater District.
Shannon’s mother, Odiney Brown, was encouraged to see so many people signing up.
“Hopefully they’ve got a close enough match for her,” Brown said.
Shannon won the role of Young Nala in an open audition — her first ever.
