A Republican Assemblyman from Long Island wants to make dousing cops with a bucket of water a felony — punishable by up to four years in prison.

The bill would make it a Class E felony to “throw or spray water, to any other substance, against an on-duty police officer or peace officer.”

“What we witnessed Monday was disgraceful,” the bill’s would-be sponsor, Assemblyman Mike LiPetri (R-Massapequa) seethed.

“To show such little respect for our brave police officers is abhorrent, but speaks to the bigger issue of how poorly they are treated in the mainstream media and under the
de Blasio administration.

“If this was the mayor or some other elected official having water thrown on them while trying to work, there would be national outrage and the offenders would be locked up,” he jabbed.

“These men and women go to work each day to protect our communities, unsure if they will return home to their families. They should be treated with the utmost respect and dignity by all.”

LiPetri told The Post he is awaiting official confirmation of the bill request.

Democratic Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, who resides in LiPetri’s Assembly district, endorsed the bill, saying, “These brazen acts of violence against our finest are not only appalling, but they represent an assault on law and order.”

The next legislative session begins in January 2020.
