It was the breast of times. But for some prudish Times Square tourists, it was the worst of times Saturday when more than 25 women defiantly — but very nurturingly — pulled out their boobs and began breast-feeding their kids as part of an international “Big Latch On” demonstration.
“Free porn?” huffed one (male) passerby. “There’s a time and a place.”
“Big Latch On” demonstrations are being held this weekend in New York, Martha’s Vineyard, Seattle, Savannah and overseas in Guam.
The moms are empowering each other through the bond of breastfeeding, says organizer Alexia Garcia.
And while they’re at it, the moms hope to show any squeamish folks that nursing a child in public is a perfectly lovely and natural thing to do. Even in grimy, rainy Times Square, with hundreds of people gawking from the TKTS line.
“It’s kind of weird to be next to people in line waiting, and who are just there, looking at us,” Francine Altman, 38, allowed as she breastfed her daughter Elsie, 2.
“And I knew it was going to be raining out. But it’s such a good thing for a little awareness, you know? … Anything you can do for solidarity, to make other women feel like they can do it.”
