LAFAYETTE, N.Y. — Authorities say they’ve charged a 26-year-old man in the alcohol-related chain-reaction crash that shut down a section of a central New York highway for more than 90 minutes.

The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office says Alexander Nickland of Syracuse was traveling north on Interstate 81 around 9:30 p.m. Thursday when he lost control of his car and crashed into a guardrail in the town of DLaFayette, just south of Syracuse.

Deputies say the crash caused a chain of other accidents involving six other vehicles, including a tractor-trailer.

Two people suffered minor injuries.

Deputies charged Nickland with driving while intoxicated. He’s due to appear in town court April 13.

It couldn’t be determined if he had a lawyer.

I-81’s northbound lanes reopened shortly after 11 p.m.
