It’s time for the mayor to get a new playbook for dealing with the City Council.

Members and political insiders predicted that Mayor Bloomberg, who turned back Democrat Bill Thompson by a mere 5 points in Tuesday’s election, will face stiffer opposition as foes feast on his modest win and he prepares to hit the legislative body with a grim budget plan later this month.

“The mayor of the City of New York is wounded, a lame duck, and his slight margin of victory should empower and embolden the City Council into action towards a progressive agenda,” Councilwoman Letitia James (D-Brooklyn) said.

Bloomberg has faced few veto overrides under the current council.

“At least initially, I think the attitude will be a little more combative. Had the guy won by 20 points, you’d certainly have to be a little humbled by that,” Councilman Lew Fidler (D-Brooklyn) said.
