SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. — A suspected drunken driver crashed into a utility pole in upstate New York, killing the driver’s son and the son’s girlfriend.

State police say the accident happened Friday evening in the village of Schaghticoke about 150 miles north of New York City.

Police say 51-year-old Philip Dobert lost control of his 1996 Pontiac Firebird and hit a utility pole. The driver’s 20-year-old son, Kyle Dobert, was in the front seat and was killed. The young man’s 20-year-old girlfriend, Alisha Schoonmaker, was ejected and was also killed.

The driver was airlifted to Albany Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Police say excessive speed and alcohol appear to have been contributing factors. Information on charges against Dobert was not immediately available.

The investigation is continuing.
