New Yorkers are taking to the new East River Ferry service like ducks to water.

Mayor Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn yesterday greeted the millionth passenger as they rode the ferry from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to Pier 11 in lower Manhattan.

The ferry, which costs $4 per ride, has experienced popularity that far exceeds Bloomberg’s original expectations, and Quinn said she wants the service expanded to all five boroughs.

The initial ridership projection when the service was launched a little more than a year ago was to have 409,000 passengers in the first 12 months.
