An 8-year-old boy is fighting for his life after accidentally shooting himself in the head with an illegal gun in his Bronx home Monday, and his father was charged in connection with the tragedy, law enforcement sources said.

The child, Noble Thomas Grant, found the Smith and Wesson 9 millimeter weapon in a hotel-like safe on a high shelf in his parents’ bedroom, sources said.

It’s unclear if the safe was locked. The boy’s mother was in the building at the time of the shooting, but not in the apartment, according to sources.

Now the child is undergoing surgery, and law enforcement sources said if he is to make a “miracle recovery,” the next 24 hours are critical.

The child’s father, 43-year-old Rajon Grant, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. He has three prior arrests, according to sources.

The shooting happened at 5 Fordham Hill Oval, a University Heights gated community co-op billed as an “Oasis in the Bronx.”

City Councilman Fernando Cabrera lives in another building in the development and said the NYPD updated him on the situation.

“I just got information that he illegally possessed the gun,” Cabrera told the Post.

“He does own a nightclub,” the lawmaker said of the 43-year-old suspect.

Cabrera said there was reason to be hopeful about the child’s condition.

“The good news is that the bullet did not penetrate the skull so the child is going to make it,” the Democrat said. “We are praying for him.”

Next door neighbor Eric King said he jumped into action after the shot was fired.

“The two younger children came knocking on my door, yelling and screaming to come next door. I heard yelling and screaming when I ran into the apartment,” King told the Post.

“To my understanding, I’m still not clear on all the facts, but he might have been playing with his fathers gun,” King said. “It might have gone off, and the gun may not have been safeguarded properly, and he shot himself in the head.”King said emergency workers were able to get the boy breathing before he was taken to the hospital, and “brought him back to life” before he was taken to the hospital.
