A hit-and-run driver smashed into an elderly couple on their way to church last night in Staten Island — killing the husband and seriously injuring the wife, police said.

The white Ford Econoline van that struck the couple was ditched about a mile and a half from the scene on New Dorp Avenue and Third Street, and might have been stolen, sources said.

The 78-year-old man and 77-year-old woman — whose names were not released — were headed to the 7:30 p.m. Mass at Our Lady of Peace in New Dorp, witnesses said.

A priest rushed out and performed last rites. “This is horrible,” said Bill Mirabelo, an usher at the church. “It’s a shame it had to happen on the eve of Thanksgiving.”
