An elderly man fell to his death onto scaffolding shortly after his son’s Washington Heights apartment was targeted by a trio of burglars early Saturday morning, law enforcement sources said.
Jacinto Remigio, 73, fell out a sixth-floor window that one of the thieves initially opened to climb into the apartment near West 161st Street and Broadway before he let the other two perps inside through the front door around 4:30 a.m., sources said.
An elderly man plunged to his death during a home invasion in Washington Heights early Saturday morning after a neighbor saw the victim climb out a window and fall onto scaffolding. FNTVThe suspects tied up Remigio’s son, a 40-year-old man, and stole an $8,000 golden chain and about $200 in cash before fleeing, cops said.
Remigio was out walking his dog during the robbery, but when he returned, officers were already on the scene about the burglary and asked him for his information, according to sources.
Investigators suspect Remigio, who might have been intoxicated, accidentally fell out of the window when he tried to shut it and landed on the scaffolding below, sources said.
As the unnerving robbery unraveled, the restrained man’s father, Jacinto Remigo, 73, fell from the unit’s window onto construction scaffolding, police said. FNTVHe was rushed to Harlem Hospital, but could not be saved.
Footage from the heart-wrenching scene showed Remigio on a stretcher as first responders worked to get him onto the sidewalk and into an ambulance.
“There was a loud bang early in the morning,” another resident, Richard Ramsundarsingh recalled to CBS 2.
The burglars tied up a 40-year-old man and stole a gold chain worth around $8,000 and about $200 in cash, according to authorities. FNTV“I heard the sound. You think it’s the neighborhood.”
A neighbor, Heriberto Garcia, told NBC 4 that Remigo climbed out of the window and attempted to use a small ledge to reach another window leading up to the fatal fall.
“It’s just terrible,” neighbor Henrique Sobrinho told ABC 7.
“And my condolences to him and his entire family – it’s awful.”
The three burglary suspects, all men, are being sought by the NYPD after they fled.
