An elderly man died hours after he was struck by an ambulance while crossing a street in the East Village Monday afternonn, officials said.

Gen Zhan, 81, of Kips Bay was hit at around 1:15 p.m. when a 22-year-old man driving an ambulance south on Second Avenue made a left turn onto East 14th Street and struck him as was walking north onto 14th Street in the crosswalk.

Zhan, who sustained severe body trauma, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, cops said.

The driver of the ambulance remained on scene.

Both the NYPD and the FDNY are investigating the accident.

A spokesman for the FDNY, which oversees the EMS, could not say Monday night whether the ambulance driver was on his way to a call at the time of the tragedy.
