A 91-year-old man was critically injured in Chinatown early Saturday when a car driven by a Department of Sanitation employee hit him, police said.

The man was trying to cross Canal Street near Elizabeth Street at about 6:30 a.m. when he was struck by a Ford Escape heading east down Canal, authorities said.

Emergency responders found the man in the roadway with severe trauma to his body and rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

The driver, 61, remained at the scene and was not arrested.

The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad will determine the cause of the crash.
