A 92-year-old Stuyvesant Town resident is in critical condition after her apartment caught fire this morning, authorities said.

The flames began in Edna Stone’s 11th-floor apartment on East. 20th Street near Avenue C at 10:45 a.m., authorities said.

Neighbors said the elderly woman hoards newspapers, which may have served as kindling for the fire that raged for 45 minutes.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to Stone’s apartment.

“There was tons of smoke in the hallway,” said 12th-floor resident Scott Ludnar, 50. “When I went to the stairwell, the fireman told me to go back into my apartment because that’s the safest place.”

Stone was rushed to New York Hospital in critical condition. She is suffering from 2nd degree burns to her face and smoke inhalation, sources said.
