A 76-year-old taxi driver was killed early Thursday when she crashed her car in Battery Park City, authorities said.

Lena Pitu was driving her yellow cab near the corner of South End Avenue near Liberty Street when she struck a metal barrier on the sidewalk around 1:20 a.m.

She did not have a passenger in the car at the time.

Pitu was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Police sources said it appears Pitu experienced some sort of medical episode, causing her to lose control of her cab and crash.

The incident is still under investigation.
