A stranger tried raping an elderly Queens woman in her apartment during a terrifying home invasion early Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The 74-year-old told authorities she had just returned home and had just gotten out of the shower around 12:45 a.m. when she heard a knock at the door of her apartment on 38th Avenue near 108th Street in North Corona, cops said.
When she opened the door, the man barged in, bashed her in the head with a glass bottle and knocked her to the ground.
The stranger then forced her into a bedroom, where he tried to sexually assault her before fleeing, cops said.
Authorities received a 911 call about 40 minutes later, at about 1:25 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said. Medics transported the victim to Elmhurst Hospital Center for her non-life-threatening injuries, including a cut to her head.
“She lives alone and is very independent,” said a neighbor, who asked to be anonymous. “I woke up and I saw all the police but I didn’t hear anything. It’s scary.”
The victim described her attacker as about 30 to 35 years old, 5 feet 6 and 170 pounds, police said. He was last seen wearing gray pants and a gray shirt.
The NYPD’s Special Victims Division is investigating the attack.
