An elderly woman was left in critical condition after being stabbed in the neck by a homeless man in a random attack in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday.

The terrifying incident occurred near Olympic Boulevard and Hope Street around 10:15 a.m., according to the LAPD.
Authorities later took the assailant, who is believed to be homeless, into custody near Fifth and Flower streets.
The victim, who police described as between 60 and 70 years old, was walking on the street when the attacker suddenly stabbed her without warning.
The victim was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon.
A physician’s assistant at the scene rushed over and applied pressure to the victim’s neck, “which we believe assisted in saving the victim’s life,” said LAPD Central Division Lt. James Mankey.
The stabbing happened outside the view of surveillance cameras, but the suspect was captured on camera both before and after the attack.
