Emergency jet land
A plane bound from Boston to Florida carrying 148 passengers was struck by lightning and diverted to land in New Jersey last night.
The West Palm Beach-bound JetBlue Airbus 320 took off from Boston at 8:54 p.m., and made the unscheduled landing at Newark Airport about 11 p.m.
“The jet was hit by multiple lightning strikes that caused multiple systems failures,” a law-enforcement source told The Post.
The plane initially diverted to Kennedy Airport, but was too heavy to land because it was carrying a nearly full load of fuel.
It circled for more than an hour to burn off the extra fuel, the law-enforcement source said.
The passengers were put onto another flight that departed just after midnight, a JetBlue spokesman said, adding that the plane was diverted “out of an abundance of caution.”
Also yesterday, Delta Flight 3284 from Detroit struck a bird as it was preparing to land at JFK. The jet’s right wing struck the bird about 6:30 p.m., but the plane landed safely.
