A man who cops say was emotionally disturbed, high on drugs and throwing items around his Bronx apartment died shortly after officers cuffed him Wednesday night, police said.

About 7 p.m., cops arrived at the apartment on East 137th Street near Willis Avenue in Mott Haven, where a 59-year-old woman told them that her husband, Richard Gonzalez, 55, was acting in a violent manner.

As the officers interviewed the woman in the hallway, Gonzalez walked out of the apartment and aggressively tried to pull her inside, cops said.

The officers intervened and handcuffed Gonzalez after a brief struggle. After he was handcuffed, Gonzalez started to “exhibit signs of distress,” cops said.

About a minute later, EMS arrived and treated Gonzalez on scene before rushing him to Lincoln Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are continuing to investigate Gonzalez’s death.
