It looks like the highway to hell, but miraculously nobody was hurt when this charter bus burst into flames on the BQE yesterday.
Passengers scrambled to safety as the 1:51 p.m. explosion sent plumes of smoke and a rancid smell of burnt rubber into the air.
“It was a really intense, red fire,” said Dan Angeli, an artist working on the sixth floor of a nearby building on Hall Street in Brooklyn. “We could even feel it, it was so hot.”
“I heard somebody screaming, and when I looked up I saw this bus was on fire. It was raging,” said witness Joe Bailey.
Luckily, the quick-thinking driver pulled the 2008 Freightliner over on the expressway near Flushing Avenue and got everyone out.
The fire was sparked apparently by a manufacturing defect.
