Before he was unceremoniously shown the door as president of Lincoln Center — for dating, and twice promoting, an underling — Jed Bernstein was an “aggressive” ladies’ man around Broadway, those who know him recalled Wednesday.
“When Jed was head of the Broadway League,” from 1995 to 2006, “and later as a producer, there’s no question he had a reputation of being very aggressive around the women of Broadway,” one insider said of the unmarried 61-year-old.
“He aggressively went after a number of girls who were in the choruses of shows at that time,” the insider dished of the busy bachelor.
His arm-candy has included Broadway actress and “30 Rock” star Jane Krakowski, whom he escorted to the Tony Awards in 2004, among many other events.
“If he didn’t date Jane Krakowski, he certainly squired her around and gave the impression that they were an item,” the insider said. “He certainly likes to surround himself with women. A casting couch was not something you’d want to sit on in his office.”
Jed Bernstein and Jane KrakowskiFilmMagicBernstein stepped down from Lincoln Center in mid-April after 27 months on the job.
Earlier this week, the center issued a statement confirming that Bernstein “had violated Lincoln Center human-resources policy by not disclosing a personal relationship with an employee.”
Bernstein’s relationship with the employee — a woman in her 30s who holds a management position — was consensual, a source confirmed Wednesday.
Neither was married, and the relationship has since ended.
The Broadway League, formerly the League of American Theatres and Producers, was a “gentleman’s club” back when Bernstein took the helm, transforming it into a vibrant industry-trade association, an insider told The Post.
“He hired a lot of young, attractive women,” the insider said. “There were actresses on Broadway going back to the ‘90s who because of his position, he was able to date.
“He’s not a harasser,” the insider stressed. “But he comes from the advertising world,” starting as an ad man for Ogilvy & Mather.
“There’s a little bit of the ‘Mad Men’ quality to how he treated women.
“I never had the sense that he was crossing the line, but he was definitely the kind to say, ‘I am a powerful man, why don’t you come out with me.’ ”
Bernstein was not available to comment, a spokeswoman said.
