Jan Hodenfield, a former New York Post reporter and rock-music columnist, died in Brooklyn last Thursday after a brief illness, with his family at his side.

He was 74.

A stylish individualist, Hodenfield worked at Rolling Stone magazine and came to The Post in 1971.

He left in 1978 and went on to edit and write for several popular-culture magazines here and in Europe.

“He was, simply, the best editor any of us have ever had,” said Glenn Thrush, a senior White House reporter for politico.com, who worked for Hodenfield at a Manhattan community newspaper in the early 1990s.

Hodenfield is survived by his daughter, Hallie, son Tor, their mother, Lynn Hodenfield, and his brothers, Tim, K.C. and Chris.
