New York history buffs are getting a rare chance to view a collection of spectacular maps from 1811 that were the first to show the grid plan for Manhattan.

At the request of Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, the 92 hand-drawn and colored panels have been assembled into a 16-by-60-foot room for display at the Municipal Building on Centre Street.

It will be open free of charge to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

As Beep, Brewer is the keeper of the Commissioners’ Plan collection by surveyor John Randel Jr., who mapped Manhattan over 10 years from the Battery to Inwood.
